Cable Ratings & Protection

There is an increasing move away from 70°C PVC insulation to materials that are more environmentally friendly, for example 90°C XLPE.The ratings of fusegear, switches, accessories, etc.are generally based upon the equipment being connected to conductors intended to be operated at a temperature not exceeding 70°C in normal service. In view of the above, it is recommended that the practice of designs based upon conductor temperatures of 70°C be regarded as the norm. The equipment manufacturer should be consulted to ascertain the reduction of nominal current rating of the equipment if conductor temperatures exceeding 70°C are used.
In addition, an overriding factor is often voltage drop. Fuses with gG characteristics protect associated cables against both overload and short circuit current, provided that the current rating of the fuse 1N is equal or less than the current carrying capacity of the cable 1z. In motor circuits, the motor starter will provide the overload protection and the fuses will provide the short circuit protection.The maximum fuse size that can be used depends upon the type of cable used and is determined using the appropriate K factor. The following table gives the maximum sizes of fuses that are recommended for two popular cables with copper conductors, 70°C PVC (K = 115) and 90°C thermosetting (K = 143).

Motor CircuitsIn motor circuits, the fuse has to withstand the motor'sstarting current and often requires a higher rating than themotor's full load current.Coordination recommendations aremade by the manufacturers of motor starters in accordancewith IEC 60947-4-1.To get Type 2 coordination with fuses,tests are performed with the latest gG or gM fuses to BS88or IEC 60269 that have pre-arcing I2t values towards the bottom of specified limits.This means that Cooper Bussmannfuses are suitable to provide Type 2 coordination.Extended dual ratings of motor circuit protection fuses withgM characteristics are available in most popular fuse sizes toextend the use of associated equipment with appropriateeconomies.In the majority of applications, gG fuses areused.It is not essential to use gM fuses for motor circuitprotection, they simply extend the utilization of standardequipment.

Current Limiting High-Speed Class J Drive Fuses
JHL series class J fuses combine the performance of high-speed semiconductor fuses and the convenience of Class J branch-circuit fuses in one small package, allowing maximum protection for AC and DC drives and controllers.

JHL series high-speed fuses can be used with GS and DURAPULSE drives in non-UL applications. Fuse the drive according to NEC guidelines (NEC Article 430).

For UL applications, GS and DURAPULSE drives require Class T fuses (refer to the drive’s user manual for details).

Current Limiting Class T Fuses & Holders
TJN and TJS Class T fuses are extremely fast-acting industrial fuses in a compact, space-saving size. These Edison fuses are ideal as the main fuse protection for panel boards, load centers, meter stacks, and AC drives. These type T fuses are also referred to as fast blow fuses or high speed fuses.

Class TJN: 300 VAC, 1-200 Amp, 225-600 Amp

Current Limiting Class RK5 Fuses & Holders
Popular fuses and economical fuses for most applications, especially motors and transformers. Recommended for AC power distribution system mains, feeders and branch circuits having inductive loads (motors, transformers) or non-inductive loads (lighting, heating) where the available short-circuit current does not exceed 200,000 RMS symmetrical amperes. These true dual element, time-delay fuses have minimum industry standard time-delay of 10 seconds at 5 times the fuse rating (8 sec. minimum for 250V, 30A and less). The time-delay characteristics of these fuses allows them to be sized closer to the running current of inductive loads to reduce cost and provide tight overcurrent protection. UL, CSA

Current Limiting Class RK1 Fuses & Holders
Up to 40% more current limitation and up to 350% more Amps-Squared-Second (I2t) limitation under fault conditions than ECNR/ECSR series fuses, reducing the potential for damage. They also offer a better selection for electrical power system designers and superior short circuit protection for breakers having inadequate interrupting ratings.
